Free radicals are thought to be the basis for the cellular damage of aging, chronic illness, heart disease, infections and cancer; yet we cannot totally avoid them. Our bodies are constantly forming free radicals during the normal course of producing energy and neutralizing bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. We are also routinely exposed to them from our environment as a result of air pollution, electromagnetic fields and toxins in our food, including pesticides, food additives and processing derivatives. In addition, chronic stress adds to the free radical load.

There is a group of superstar vitamins, minerals and enzymes, called antioxidants, that protect the body from the destructive actions of free radicals. Antioxidants in the right amounts and combinations, have been shown to prevent free radical damage. While we can get many antioxidants from a proper diet, it may not be nearly enough to compensate for the free radical damage that occurs from our exposure to environmental and emotional stressors.
