Ready-To-Eat Vaccines

Rather than encourage people to eat whole, natural foods, our government has spiked some of our highly refined, chemicalized foods with various vitamins and minerals in order to prevent gross deficiencies. Now, scientific advances may pave the way for additional tinkering of a much more serious nature.

Researchers at Cornell University have managed to use bioengineering to create potatoes containing a vaccine. A gene from an E. coli bacterium was inserted into the potato genome, and the plants that resulted were able to produce antibodies to a bacterial toxin in test subjects. The scientists see their discovery as leading the way to the widespread delivery of vaccines to populations through common foodstuffs.

[Editor: Vaccinations are now required by law, despite the fact that many people question their safety. With the recent developments in biotech, it may not be long before our foods will routinely carry vaccines.]  Based on information in: Science, 5-8-98
